Alan Atkinson
It was suggested that I arrange chess matches at my school as part of my Award.
Later in life I became a Director of the British Chess Federation, and am currently the ECF Manager of (chess) Arbiters.
In my time I was awarded my Gold Award when the Award's manager went to Swaziland (Eswatini) to develop the Award Scheme there; I became an Award expedition Assessor, and I have been Vice Chair of the County Award Panel in Kent, and Chair of the Canterbury panel.
Others have tried to set up a 'National Service' for volunteer activity, the Award Scheme does just that; by getting young people to do things for others when (probably me too) they themselves are at their most self centred and demanding, you instil in them a sense of the value of helping others.
