During my teenage years I had always suffered with terribly low self-esteem, and had started drinking and dabbling with drugs. Doing the Gold award took me out of my comfort zone so many times and made me realise what I was capable of. It gave me so much confidence and instilled a love of the outdoors which I enjoy to this day. I’m a 43 year-old mum of 3 and twice a year I complete the SAS Fan Dance across the Brecon Beacons with 35lb on my back. All thanks to Prince Phillip.
I was awarded the Gold at St James’ Palace by HRH Prince Phillip himself. He approached our group and asked if we had parents who had completed the award. I told him my father had. He was so excited, and he asked me where he was. I pointed him out in the audience and he went over and shook my father’s hand. Such a special moment.
