My friend, Hazel, and I had completed our bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.
When it was announced, in 1972, that Prince Philip would be visiting Pendlebury Hall in Stockport. This was the centre where the award was coordinated and we were invited to go along. There were hundreds of people there. Hazel and I stood near the Fire Service stand, as we had completed that module.
The Duke of Edinburgh came in and strode over to us as soon as he entered the room and asked “ put out any good fires lately?” Which of course made us laugh nervously.
There were a pack of newspaper photographers following him and the photograph captures that moment.
I have felt very proud to achieve the award and humbled in a room full of high achievers and officials the Duke came straight over to have a brief chat with us.
