The passing of the Duke of Edinburgh reminded me of when my friend Diana and I received our gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award from Prince Philip in 1980. Before receiving our awards we were made aware of the protocol for interacting with the Prince - curtsey, wear gloves, don't speak unless he speaks to you first, etc. When Diana's turn came, the Prince asked her, "What did you do for your expedition?" The expedition was a backpacking trip around Europe, started in London. Much to the horror of our Ranger leader, Diana poked the Duke and said, "We went to your house!" Prince Philip did not mind at all. My mother took a picture of Diana receiving her award and breaking royal protocol.
