I started the Dof E award in March 1963 and achieved my Gold Award in July 1966.
For my Gold Award my residential training course was called A holiday for someone else.
The holiday was for handicapped children from St. Vincent's hospital in Pinner, Middlesex.
I was asked to take care of a severely handicapped boy who could not walk or talk.
At first I had to find ways of being with him, communicating with him, knowing what made him happy.
I always remember one lunch time when I was feeding him, we laughed so much his lunch went flying! It was so wonderful to be able to see happiness on his face and to share that experience.
I will never forget that week with him, his courage and fortitude was humbling, he gave so much to me.
