Memory of receiving award at 19years old at Buckingham Palace and meeting Duke of Edinburgh, he asked me my plans and I said I was already a student nurse which he considered very worthy! I used my Gold DoE award in CVs as I moved through my career and it always evoked a question at interview, and I was always happy to answer those. My presentation was on Monday 12May 1980 at 1.45pm entry, as was with the Midlands group and we were in the Blue Drawing Room. I tripped over in the courtyard before entering the palace and tore holes in my tights, I was told I couldn't meet DoE looking like that but a wonderful kind member of palace staff directed me to the ladies and told me to turn my tights round! Simple solution and I was placed on front row, hence managing a chat with DoE when he informally came to speak to us.
