In 2018, I joined a British Boarding school as an international student. Signing up for DofE greatly helped me settle in as it provided me with a fantastic group of supportive people, the opportunity to explore new skills in the unfamiliar environment and an adventure. When I first arrived in the UK, I was rather shy and insecure about my language skills. However, once I experienced the immense community spirit and support, I realised that if I dared to stand up, if I raised my voice and took action, I could achieve a lot. During our expedition, we got lost a million times, climbed over barbed wire fences, noticed that the Cornish public footpath oftentimes does not deserve the title of a path and got chased by angry cows. So many absurd yet wonderful and hilarious memories that have shaped me as a person and will always accompany me. To me, DofE means encouragement to become the person you are, to become a person who can accomplish the seemingly impossible and run faster than a cow.
