Rose Poka
I attribute the better part of who I have become to the DofE Award. I am Rose Poka, a volunteer and a bronze, silver and gold Award holder in Kenya. Doing my Award between 14 and 17 , I was shaped to be disciplined and of a positive attitude. I learned respect, commitment, determination, persistence and patience; values that guide me through life to date. I mastered the noble art of leadership, confidence and service to the community.
I am an outgoing individual. The adventurous journey exposed me to my environment and made me more sensitive to matters involving my environment; planting trees and ensuring it is clean.
The skills attained while undertaking the Award remain with me for life. I am able to crotchet door mats and table mats and this has been earning me an extra income. I have also developed Soft skills such as effective communication while interacting with participants, leaders and staff members.
At the gold level, my community service was tutoring other young people especially in Mathematics. It became a passion and This influenced my career Choice of becoming a teacher. I am now a trained secondary school teacher. In teaching, I have countless opportunities to interact with the young people and share that which I was taught while a participant.
The DofE Award also provides us with opportunities to interact and associate with Award participants and staff from other countries during international events. I gained international exposure And was able to network when I participated in the forum 2018 in Ghana. I have since been able to increase literacy in my community through teaching children and adolescents. The Award has Equipped me for Life. I am Equipped to Equip.
I am because the Award is. I am because you are. I am utterly grateful.
