I am eternally grateful to the Duke of Edinburgh, for his award scheme, for lighting the spark to push myself to do new things, to learn about myself, to achieve things you previously thought you couldn't achieve. I learned about the police force, I learned to swim better, I learned the double bass which enabled me to join a jazz band, and I learned about local churches on the expedition. I kept this project. The 3/4 size double bass (I'm not very tall) - I borrowed from the local peripatetic service and sadly had to give back, but for my 40th picked up a bass guitar, and all the notes came back to me! I was lucky enough to play for Prince Edward when he came to Guernsey for the Duke of Edinburgh to meet students in 1987. Prince Edward was visiting the Island in his capacity as Chairman of the 30th Anniversary Tribute Project to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and as such included meeting many of the Island's youth organisations. I am also pleased my daughter achieved her Silver Award. I do hope this award scheme continues and perhaps Prince Edward will take up the baton or his children, and continue this.

Lastly, I wish to say how sad I am for the family. The Duke of Edinburgh's legacy has had a long and lasting effect. Thank you. Catherine Allaway
