By the time I accepted my Gold award at St James’ Palace in late 2015, it was known that the Duke himself did not attend all presentation ceremonies. As a result, I felt beyond honoured when I learned he would be in attendance when I received my award.

Even now I can clearly picture the warmth of His Royal Highness’ smile as he entered the room to acknowledge us. I was especially touched at how, despite the large number of recipients, he seemed insistent on addressing each of us individually. If I hadn’t already believed in his selflessness and dedication beforehand, that would certainly have convinced me.

I still recall how he remarked that my apparel looked smart, and after voicing my gratitude I proudly stated that it was my college uniform.

All in all, HRH made it a day I will never forget, and one that will undoubtedly remain among the milestone honours of my life.
