With my friends in my local Air Training Corps Squadron in Warsop, Nottinghamshire, I completed the Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of the Award Scheme between 1987 and 1990, receiving my Award at St James’ Palace in December 1991. It was a proud day. We were delighted to be hosted in our reception room to be hosted by Peter Bowles, who was absolutely charming. We didn’t really expect to meet His Royal Highness, but without to long a wait, he arrived and engaged with each group. I can honestly say that throughout our DofE endeavours, we often spoke about the Duke and the standards he eat and expected us to reach. We earnestly felt that responsibility, but equally aware of the fun we were entitled to enjoy on the way. Each award was hard earned - as were the blisters! But the modest achievements we made have made us all better then we otherwise would have been.

My own sons are now engaged in the programme with one Bronze award earned, and silver and a second bronze underway. What a gift His Royal Highness has given to this country and its young people, as well as so many across the Commonwealth. I wear my badges every day (covertly on the lining of my Royal Air Force jacket every day)! Group Captain James Beldon MBE RAF - and DofE Gold Award holder.
