In 1969 we did our expedition in the Oxfordshire Chilterns enjoyed great weather on the day walk and camped on a schoolmates farm at Turville. Woke in the morning to a very severe frost it took me ages to strike a match to light the gas (butane) camping stove. We managed to heat some water for a drink eventually and began to defrost.
My special subjects were forestry and railway affairs I became involved with restoring steam locomotives at Didcot as a result.
Many years later I enjoyed walking and climbing with various clubs in England Wales and Scotland, in 2000 my wife and I bought a remote cottage in Mid Wales where we have lived off grid for 12yrs.
We then moved to a Victorian Villa where we have been restoring it back to original.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme inspired me to take on any challenges in life sometimes physical or technical or mental sometimes all three!
I have worked in F1 motor racing and as a technician in the Physics laboratory at Oxford University.
Later in life I worked in care work for Adults with Learning Difficulties.
Sadly my teacher who organised the DofE at my school left to teach in the Channel Islands so I never managed to say thank you for her support.
I don't know if any of my fellow schoolmates will recall these days and experiences but I have never forgotten them.
Every time Prince Philip or indeed any of the Royal Family appeared on TV I immediately thought back to those days doing the Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme.
