My Dofe journey began at the age of 14 and after my Bronze and Silver Awards I completed my Gold at the age of 22. Through taking part in the award I gained many skills and this contributed to "the can do attitude" that I have embraced ever since. I was given so many new and excited opportunities through taking part that I would never have undertaken if I had not have taken part. I spent a gap year in Hong Kong volunteering at the Outward Bound school. It was during this time that I worked towards most of my Gold award. Upon returning to the U.K. I took part in my practice and qualifying expeditions with some y.p. from Belmont Academy in South Ayrshire. It was around this time that I became the y.p. ambassador for East Ayrshire Council and met HRH Prince Andrew. I received my Gold Award at Holyrood shortly after from HRH Prince Phillip. After the Award I wanted to help other y.p. gain theirs. I became a leader with East Ayrshire Council and later an Award Officer for East Renfrewshire Council. Shortly after I became very unwell and had to stop working. Years later I returned to work as a Dofe Leader and assessor for East Renfrewshire. It was due to the skills I gained, facing challenges as part of my awards and the support of Paul Tulloch who became the new Award Officer/manager that I was able to overcome and challenge my condition. I owe everything to the Award scheme it truly has enabled me to strive forward.
