I remember doing my Bronze DofE back in my teen years. The hike and camping I will remember for the strength to push through up the hill at Ramscoombe in somerset and the excitement of setting up camp, getting out my tranjia cooking pot. Food never tasted so good.

But whay i took away more than the trek was the volunteering part. My hours were completed in the old peoples home opposite my school. I used to soend my lunch hours playing cards and chatting to residents, helping with food, getting cups of tea. It taught me respect for the older generation, humility for what I had in my life and awakened a desire for a career path to help others.

Fast forward 30 odd years and I am now a Charity CEO at Bikeability Trust having spent 20 odd years at NSPCC and Childrems Society. I have no doubt that the volunteeringband character building experience of the Bronze award set me on this path

Empathy, resillience, strength and leadership. I owe much of who I am today to DofE.

Rest in Peace HRH Prince Phillip and thank you for the millions of young peoples lives you set out a better path for because of your wisdom and vision.
