Loved completing the D of E award particularly the expeditions. I completed bronze, silver and gold awards. Had a snowstorm for the silver expedition and then blazing sunshine for the gold, what a contrast. Lucky enough to go to Buckingham Palace for a garden party where we were allowed to take 2 parents and met with a plethora of sports stars who endorsed the D of E. I remember squeezing Frank Bruno’s biceps and chatting to Gary Lineker amongst others. We also were lucky enough to speak to Prince Phillip who asked if we got lost on the expedition which of course we did. Pre mobile phones as I completed it in the 1989, so very few photos either but fantastic memories.

Hoping my son and daughter will continue the tradition and complete their D of E awards.

RIP Prince Phillip, thank you for an inspirational award that serves an even greater purpose today, to build character and service into young people.
