Having walked in the rain all day on our Assessed Expedition in the Lake District, we arrived at Styhead Tarn where we were going to wild camp. It was very stormy, with heavy rain and strong winds and after the five of us spent 25 minutes putting up one of our tents, we were told that it was too unsafe for us to wild camp and we had to take it down again and abandon the camp. “Don’t bother putting the tent back in your rucksacks as it isn’t far to the road” we were told. 4 km later when we finally reached the road, we really wished we had!
In his Report, our Assessor wrote “I was extremely impressed by this team as this was as challenging as it gets. They experienced some of the worst conditions possible, gale force winds and lots of rain” which really meant something coming from someone whose job it is to assess DofE Expeditions in the Lake District.
