Mohammed’s confidence soared after choosing public speaking for his DofE Skills section

When Mohammed decided to sign up for his DofE Bronze he believed that it would be an unforgettable experience and it didn’t disappoint. He gained so much from his own DofE journey that he became a youth ambassador.

As a young leader, Mohammed, form Coventry, was able to build on talents he honed while doing his DofE, when he focused on a course in public speaking which has improved his confidence.

Mohammed  said: “I started the DofE in 2016 as a new opportunity to try something new for myself and found I have really enjoyed it which has led me on to Silver and Gold and a DofE Young Ambassador which allowed me to use my influence to promote DofE.”

“I’d heard about DofE from friends who talked about the advantages of it and how useful it could be for your CV or personal statements on job applications, and I definitely didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity. I went in knowing that I would enjoy the trips, feeling very optimistic and sure that it would be an unforgettable experience.”

“For my skills, I attended a course on public speaking which is something I’ve regularly done in my personal life and for DofE. It was a three-to-six-month course and I wanted to improve my confidence, I’ve always liked the idea of talking to large crowds and expressing myself, I really enjoyed it.”

“The DofE teaches you how to adapt to situations that you find yourself in which is so important and really applies to every scenario in life. When there is a new situation or something you have to get through, learning how to adapt your mindset, using your physical and mental capabilities, is so important.”

“I also learned about planning ahead something that I didn’t do very well in my Bronze but did my Silver. You have to make sure your plan matches the goal, and that you have your required time frame. For our expedition we knew we had to cover a certain distance every day, we walked for six hours, planned so we didn’t take any impossible routes and thought about different things that could happen and how we would manage.”
